Biography

Walter was born on 29 March 1880. He was the son of Edward Guinness 1st Earl of Iveagh and Adelaide Guinness.

His family homes were at Farmleigh near Dublin, and at Elveden in Suffolk, England. At Eton, he was elected head of 'Pop', the club for prefects, and was appointed Captain of Boats.

He gained the rank of Captain in the Imperial Yeomanry. He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1901, where he was wounded and was mentioned in despatches.

On 24 June 1903, he married Lady Evelyn Hilda Stuart Erskine (1883–1939) (third daughter of Shipley Gordon Stuart Erskine, 14th Earl of Buchan) at St. George Hanover Square, London, England. The Earls of Buchan were an ancient family in the Scottish nobility.^[2]

They had three children; Bryan (1905-1992), Murtogh (1913-2002) and Grania (1920-1994).

Walter was an Anglo-Irish politician and businessman. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Unionist) for Bury St. Edmunds between 1907 and 1931.

He fought in the First World War, in Gallipoli and Flanders, and was mentioned in despatches three times. He was awarded the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917 and bar (1918). He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Suffolk Yeomanry and was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.).

He held the office of Under-Secretary for War between 1922 and 1923.

He was created 1st Baron Moyne, of Bury St. Edmunds, co. Suffolk [U.K., 1932] on 21 January 1932.

Walter served as the British minister of state in the Middle East until November 1944, when he was assassinated by the Jewish terrorist group Lehi. He was 64 years of age.
