Biography

Nellie (Greenaway) Petley was born in Scotland.

Helen Craig Greenaway was born in Alloa on 1 July 1869 and was the second daughter of Thomas Craig Greenaway and Elizabeth Gray. She was named after her paternal grandmother, Helen (Craig) Greenaway.^[1]

Although Helen was born in Alloa, her family were originally from Falkirk and they eventually moved back. Helen, known as Nellie, lived in Campfield St which was near the town centre and several foundries, including the famous Carron Iron Works, so it is hardly surprising her father and older brothers were iron moulders.^[2] Helen went into service and can be found with the Methven family in Polmont on the 1891 census and later with the Reid family in Lanarkshire on the 1901 census.^[3][4]

Nellie had an affair with a married man, Robert Jack, which resulted in the birth of an illegitimate child, Nelly Greenaway, on 16 May 1902. The child was given up for adoption, however she died of meningitis on 30 November 1902, aged 6 months.^[5][6] Nellie later married Emmerson Thomas Petley on 12 October 1916 but they had no children.^[7]

Helen Craig Greenaway died of kidney disease, aged 67 years, on 28 February 1937. ^[8]
