Family
Dorothy Gray was married twice and was the mother of children by both husbands. Dorothy married, first, Samuel Throop (or Throope) on 23 May 1722 at the Trinity Church (Church of England) at Newport, Rhode, Island. [3] Samuel and Dorothy (Gray) Throope were the parents of the following (3) children: [4]
Mary Throop; born 1723; married Joshua Barker
Samuel Throop;
Macey Throop; born 23 January 1726/7; died 21 April 1756
Dorothy's first husband, Samuel Throop, died on 28 Nov 1726 a Lebanon, Windham, Connecticut Colony leaving her with three children under the age of four, hence she would have been in a position of needing support for herself and her children, and remarried on 25 Feb 1729 to Ebenezer Hyde. [5]
Ebenezer and Dorothy (Gray) (Throope) Hyde then had the following (7) children: [4][5]
William Hyde; born 10 April 1730

Ebenezer Hyde; born 10 September 1732
Deborah Hyde; born 16 October 1734

) Find a Grave Notes: "Dorothy Gray was the daughter of Samuel Gray and Deborah Tucker Church. According to "Mayflower Births and Deaths, Vol. 1 and 2," she was born 14 Jan 1704 in Little Compton, Newport County, Colony of Rhode Island. However, the record for United Congregational Church of Little Compton, available though "Rhode Island, Vital Extracts, 1639 - 1899," shows that she was born 30 Jun 1706. For now, I will leave the Mayflower date, because it would otherwise conflict with the birth date for Joseph Gray. This requires further research, as I don't know the source of the Mayflower birth date for Dorothy. {see FAG profile for more extensive biography} "

) Hyde Genealogy; page 80:Deborah Hyde (163), born at Lebanon, Conn., on 16 Oct 1734, was the eldest daughter of Ebenezer Hyde (27) by his first wife, Dorothy Throop of Lebanon, was a grand daughter of Samuel Hyde (4) of the third generation. She married 11 May 1758, Amos Robinson, of Lebanon. They settled at Lebanon and had the following children recorded to them there. I have no further account of them.
The following published genealogy has incorrectly identified Dorothy, the wife of Samuel Thoop, to be Dorothy Spofford and is the point of origin of the conflation causing present day genealogists to incorrectly identify the maiden name of Dorothy Throop, wife of Samuel, as Spofford {incorrect} rather than Gray {correct}.[3] :
) Spofford Genealogy; page 43: Dorothy Spofford, daughter of Thomas and Bethiah Hazeltine) Spofford was born 3 Feb 1709 and married Samuel Throop.
) Spofford Genealogy; page 54: Dorothy Spaford and Samuel Throop were married about 1726 and were the parents of Samuel Throop and Mary Throop, born 23 Jan 1727. {This 1888 bit of misinformation is the root source of the erroneous identification of Dorothy Spofford, rather than the correct Dorothy Gray, [3] as the wife of Samuel Throop; and has generated the widespread conflation of Dorothy Spofford as the wife of Samuel Throop to this present day.}
Research Notes
) 2021-05-01: Prior to this date Dorothy Spofford (1711-) had been identified as the Dorothy whom married Samuel Throop, because she had erroneously been identified in Dr. Jeremiah Spofford's, Spofford Genealogy as the Dorothy who married Samuel Throop. The Rhode Island Vital records, a primary source, establishes with certainty, that the correct maiden surname of Samuel Throop's wife Dorothy was, in fact, Dorothy Gray. Thus, as of this date, Dorothy Spofford has been removed as a spouse of Samuel Throop.
