Lt. Colonel John Gray was born on 11 November 1801. He was the son of Owen Wynne Gray and Elizabeth Philpot. He married Barbara Hales on 23 May 1821.1 He travelled to NZ on the Sir George Seymour as Major of the 4th Division of the NZ Fencibles , arriving into Auckland on 14 January 1848.4 He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.1 He held the office of Member of the House of Representatives (M.H.R.) [New Zealand] in 1853, for South Division of Auckland. He gained the rank of Colonel in the 40th Regiment. He lived at Otahuhu, New Zealand.
He passed away on 7 April 1859 aged 57 and is buried in Ĺtahuhu, Auckland.
