Alfred was born^[1][2][3]during the second quarter of 1889 to William Gray and Maria Gray nee Williams in the registration district of Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, United Kingdom.

Alfred was baptised^[4]on 24 April 1889 in the parish of St. Paul's, Newport. At the time of the ceremony the family were residing in Dolphin Street and his father William Gray is noted as a Mariner.

The April 1891 census^[5]shows Alfred residing with his family in Dolphin Street, Newport.

The March 1901 census^[6]shows Alfred residing with his family in Charlotte Street, Islington, Middlesex, Rngland, United Kingdom.

The April 1911 census^[7]shows Alfred residing with his father William Gray and stepmother Lizzie Gray in a four roomed property in Muriel Street, Islington.

Alfred, a Clerk, married^[8]Beatrice Gray nee Ellis on 26 January 1913 at Emmanuel Church, Holloway, Middlesex. At the time of the ceremony both were residing in different properties within Mayton Street, Finsbury Park, Middlesex. His father William Gray is noted as a Mariner and his father in law Joseph Ellis is a retired Baker.
