Donald is assumed to belong to John Gray and Margaret Fowler.
Although no official record has yet been found John is obviously an important name for Donald and Kathrin, and John & Margaret (FOWLER) GRAY are in the right place (Sth Dun).
Additional circumstantial evidence comes from witnesses to various baptisms for Donald and Kathrin's children and those of his assumed siblings. [2]
DNA
Lorna would love to hear from a direct male line descendant of Donald's to try and prove that he is indeed, or is highly likely to be, the son of John GRAY & Margaret FOWLER.
If you are such a person, perhaps you would consider joining the GRAY Surname DNA project and testing at least Y-DNA37?
Also from any of the other sons to confirm the sole existing DNA signature (from Donald's brother David) [3]
Note: Entry for 4th (or 5th, not terribly legible) Dec 1750 reads: "Matrimonially contracted Donald Gray in South Dun and Kathrine Morgan there accomplished 27 Dec 1750" (the IGI shows date as 20th, but it definitely reads 27th)[5][6]
