James Graham, son of William Graham and Lucy Manners. was born 8 February 1755[1][2][3][4]. Note: James Balfour Paul in "the Scots Peerage" gives James birth date as 8 September 1755[5], as do Wikipedia and ThePeerage.

James was educated at Trinity College, where he eaned an M. A[1][5].

James served as a Member of Parliament for Richmond 1780-1784, and for Great Bedwyn, 1784-1790[5][1].He procured the repeal of the clause in the Acts 1746, c. 39, and 1747, c. 51, which prohibited the Highlanders in Scotland from wearing their national dress[5].

He was Chancellor of the Univ. of Glasgow 1781-1836[1][5].

He was appointed a Knight of the Thistle in 1793, resigning from the Order when appointed a Knight of the Garter in 1812[1][5].

He was appointed President of the Board of Trade, 10 June 1784, joint PostmasterGeneral 13 July 1784, and joint Paymaster of the Forces 6 August 1784[1][5]. James succeded his father as Duke of Montrose and Earl Graham on 23 Sep. 1790[1][5].

In November 1790, James was appointed Master of the Horse ; and in May 1791 be became a Commissioner for Indian Affairs, and was sworn a Privy Councillor[5].

On 14 January 1795 James was appointed Lord Justice-General of Scotland, and retained that office till his death in 1836[5].

James married Jemima Elizabeth Ashburnham, eldest daughter of John, second Earl of Ashburnham, on 3 March 1785 at her father's house in Mayfair, London, England[1][2][4][5].

James and Jemima had one son:

  1. James, born 4 September 1786 and died 29 April 1787[2][5].

Jemima died at London 17 September 1786, at the age of 25 years[1][2][4][5].

James married Caroline Maria Montagu, eldest daughter of George Montagu 4th Duke of Manchester on 24 Jul 1790[2][4][5].

James and Caroline had 7 children:

  1. Georgianna Charlotte born 3 June 1791[2][5].
  2. Caroline born 30 September 1792[2][5].
  3. Lucy born 25 September 1793[2][5].
  4. Martha, born 26 January 1802, died young[2][5].
  5. James born 16 July 1799 [2][5].
  6. Emily born 23 june 1805 [2][5].
  7. Montagu William born 2 February 1807[2][5].


James died at Grosvenor Square, London,England at the age of eighty-one, on 30 December 1836[1][5]. He was buried at Aberuthven, the last of his family to be interred there[1][5].
