It is not known where Robert lived as a child. His father James died in 1841, and his mother married again in about 1850 when he was 11 years old. His mother and his 3 siblings are entered in the 1841 Scotland Census living in Dotts Lane, Dysart, Fife. He is not present. It is possible that he was cared for by family or friends, as his mother had just been widowed, he was just 2 years old and his sister Christina was only 6 months old. Neither he nor his 3 siblings appear in the 1851 Census with his mother living in the household of her second husband David Stoddart.

He emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand as a single man, in 1862. It is likely that he met his future wife Janet Young on the voyage from Scotland, as they married in New Zealand the same year
