Clarence Maxwell was born 4 October 1922, in North Canterbury, New Zealand, youngest son of Joseph Johnston Young Graham and Alice Elizabeth Moody [1]
Clarence was known as John to his parents and brothers and sisters, and as Clarrie to his friends. He lived and worked in the Kaiapoi, North Canterbury area all his adult life.
He began work at the age of 15 years at the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills until it's closure, after which he worked at the Patience and Nicholson Tool factory, until his retirement.
He was called up for military service in WW2 and went to Trentham (Wellington) for training before he was to ship overseas. After a bout of rheumatic fever he was declared medically unfit and sent home before the ship left.
