Biography

William Graham was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

William, son of John Graham, was born or baptised on 27 December 1778 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.[1]

He married Margaret Muir 1802 in the Parish of Kirkpatrick and together they had 5 children:

  1. Jean, bapt 14 Jun 1803 [2]
  2. James, born 7 Jan 1810[3][4]
  3. Robert bapt. 22 Mar 1812[5]

In 1815 William was convicted Dumfries Court of Justiciary on 14 April 1814 for stealing a horse and was sentenced to 14 years transportation. He arrived in Port Jackson (Sydney) on 7 September 1815 on the Baring, which left England on 20 April 1815. On arrival at Sydney he was assigned to work for William Browne of Illawarra. His family followed him to New South Wales [6].

In 1826 the Grahams took up a 100-acre land grant next to the Shoalhaven River, which they expanded with another 640 acres the following year.[7]

He passed away in 1852 and was buried in the Graham Family Cemetery at Nowra, Shoalhaven City, New South Wales, Australia with a death date of 2 Sep 1852. [8]

Research Notes

  • The Find A Grave: Memorial #194658286 quotes the tombstone inscription as giving the date of birth to be December 16th 1772, but the memorial gives December 16th 1778. The photograph of the tombstone inscription is practically illegible. The memorial date fits with the date of 27 December 1778 in the Old Parish Registers record[1].

Graham-28775 and Graham-14514 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly duplicates, earlier profile has a birth date with no sources, is likely wrong
