Biography

Ellen was born in 1865 in Hailsham, Sussex, mother's maiden name Smith.^[1]

At the time of the 1881 England census 15-year-old Ellen was a scholar living with her widowed aunt Sarah Barratt and servant Hannah Butler in Leamington Priors, Warwickshire. Sarah was 60 years old, living off 'Income From Invested Money'.^[2]

Banns were read for Ellen and Henry Gibbon, both of this parish, at St Mary. Leamington Priors, Warwickshire on 8th, 15th and 22nd July 1888^[3] and the couple were married on 23 July 1888. Both were single; his father was Mark Gibbon, grocer and her's was John Gower, farmer.^[4]

Henry and Ellen had four children, Gower born in 1889,^[5] baptised on 29 Sept 1889 in Leamington,^[6] Enid Mary born in 1892^[7] baptised on 5 Jun 1892,^[8], John Barrett born in 1895^[9] baptised on 3 Nov 1895, father's residence St Mary's Cres, Leamington,^[10] and Dorothy, born in 1898^[11] and baptised on 29th May 1898.^[12]

Henry and Ellen lived in St Mary's Crescent, Leamington Priors, Warwickshire at the time of the 1891 census, with one child Gower and servant Rhoda Mason (13 years old). Ellen was 25 years old.^[13] Ten years later when Ellen was 35, they lived in St Mary's Road, Leamington Priors, now with four children. Ellen's younger sister Harriet E Gower was also present, and a servant Mary A Howard (14 years old). Henry was listed s a Musician Organist.^[14] In 1911 all of the children except the oldest, Gower, were at home.^[15]

An Ellen J Gibbon died in Chichester, Sussex in the last quarter of 1843, age 78.^[16]
