Biography

George Lambert Gorwyn was a member of the British Parliament for many years. ^[1]He was born in South Tawton in Devon, England, on 25 June 1866, ^[2] He was the first of two children born to George Lambert Gorwyn (1818–1885) and Grace Howard.

His father (who had dropped the surname Gorwyn in the 1870's becoming known merely as George Lambert) had inherited farms in Spreyton and Drewsteignton. His mother, Grace Howard, was the daughter of a farm labourer from South Tawton, who had worked on his father's farm. She had been his father's housekeeper. ^[3] His parents married in 1866.

In 1881, when George was 14, he was living in Okehampton, Spreyton, Devon, with his parents and one year old sister, Mary. His father was working as a farmer. ^[4]

When George was 19 years old, in 1885, his father passed away. The 1891 census found George living with his widowed mother, sister Mary, and five servants, his occupation listed as "yeoman". ^[5] Ten years later, the household remained the same, George, still single, and now called a "farmer". ^[6]

In 1904, George married Barbara Robinson Stavers ^[7]St. George Hanover Square, London and they had two daughters and two sons.

George Lambert-Gorwyn, passed away, aged 91 years, at his home, "Coffins" in Spreyton, Devon, on 17 February 1958. ^[8]
