Origins of the family

The Glorieux family of Dottignies is a family who descends from Sire Jehan Glorieux, Ecuyer, born in 1457 in the châtellenie of Lille (from a line of military officers from the goverment of Lille). This Sire Jehan was Officer at the court of Mary of Burgundy. Sire Jehan Glorieux had a son also named Jehan, born in 1490, who settled in the territory of Cooigem and Dottignies. We learn from a text concerning the sale of land in the aforementioned area that Jean "fils de Jean", originally from the châtellenie of Lille, bought an estate in Cooigem. He had 4 children, the eldest of whom, Jehan Glorieux, became the first Lord of Lassus and the ancestor of the Glorieux de Dottignies family.

Biography

Jehan was born in 1530. He passed away in 1566.

Jehan Glorieux, Esquire, married Marie Descamps, heiress of the fiefdom of Lassus, a castle situated in the territory of Cooigem and Dottignies. On the death of his father-in-law, Pierre Descamps, he became, by virtue of his marriage, the first of the Glorieux, lords of Lassus and owner of part of the Seigneurie de Nevelle. After his marriage, he resided at the Seigneurie de Lassus, where he succeeded his father-in-law. On the death of Jehan Glorieux, Lassus passed to his eldest son, Georges, and then to his grandson Jean Glorieux-du Rieu, son of Etienne Glorieux-Mulier, who sold it in 1701 to his youngest son Baudouin, who neglected to compensate his elder brothers, leading to their complaint on 30 October 1705.
