Biography

Jane was born 1825 and was baptised 22 September 1826, the same day as her sister Mary and her infant brother John who died that day, daughter of John and Jane[1]. Age is derived from the census.

In 1843, aged 16, Jane was accused of Larceny[2]

Jane Gipson married Nicholas Pascoe on 8 June 1847 at St Clement. Nicholas was a labourer of St Clement, son of Thomas (a shoemaker). Jane was a spinster of St Clement, daughter of John (a smith). Witnesses were George Vandersluys and E Gummow[3]

In the 1851 census Nicholas Pascoe (25), wife Jane (25) and children James (4) and Lucy (1) are lodging with Jane's sister Hannah Roberts (23), her husband William Roberts (24) and their daughter Jane (3m), as well as "lodger" Ann Holliwood (3, born Falmouth) on Bodmin Street, St Clement. All except Ann were born in Truro[4]

In the 1861 census, Nicholas (32, gardener), wife Jane (36) and children James H (13), Lucy A (11), Charles (7), Elizabeth (5), John (3 born St Clement) and Freddy (1) are living on St Clement Street, St Clement. All other than John were born in Truro[5]

In the 1871 census, Nicholas Pascoe (41, stoker), wife Jane (45), children Mary Jane (19, dressmaker), Charles (16, blacksmith), Elizabeth (14, servant), John (12, errand boy), Emily (7), Esther (4) and Frederick (8m) are living on Gas Hill, Kenwyn[6]

In the 1881 census, Nicholas (54, gardener born St Clement), Jane (57 born St Clement) and children Hetty (14, born St Clement) and Freddy (10, born Kenwyn) are living at 1 Gas Hill, St Johns, Kenwyn[7]

Research Notes

A possible death record is Jane died and was buried 12 August 1902 at Philleigh, nr Truro. She is 84 on the burial record, 82 in the official death register, but was actually 77. This is the only "Jane Pascoe" that died +/- 15 years that's close to Truro.

However most of her children had emigrated by this point, and she is not found in the 1891 or 1901 census. There's a possibility she emigrated too after her husband died in 1884.
