Biography

William Edward Giligan was born in 1846 Jordan Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Edward Gilligan and Elzabeth English, both of them immigrants from Ireland.

On 21 Sep 1850 (date of the 1850 census), William, age 5, lived with his parents, Edward, age 45, and mother Elizabeth, age 43, in Jordan Township, Clearfield County. HIs parents and three older siblings were born in Ireland. His other eight siblings were born in Pennsylvania. Two of his older brothers, Patrick, age 20, and James, age 18, were farmers, along with their father. His other siblings include: Mary, age 17, Elizabeth, age 15; Michael, age 13; Martin, age 10; Robert, age 9; Edward, age 7; Joesph, aage 1, and Nancy, age 5 months.[1]

On 22 Aug 1860 (date of census), William, age 15, lived with his parents, Edward, age 50, and his mother, Elizaabeth, age 48, on their farm in Jordan Township. The farm was valued at $2000 wiht personal property worth $1245. Their postoffice was Ansonville. His oldest two brothers, Patrick, age 28, and James, age 26, were laborers. He worked as a farm hand, as did Michael, age 21; Martin, age 20; Robert, age 18; and Edward, age 16. His three younger siblings were Joseph, age 12; Nancy, age 10, and John, age 8. His parents and oldest three siblings were born in Ireland. He and all his other siblings were born in Pennsylvania. He, Edward, Joseph, Nancy, and John attended school.[2]
