Thomas Bannatyne Gillies emigrated to New Zealand with his father and his wife, Catherine Douglas, on the "Slains Castle" in 1852. He became a prominent politician, holding a seat first in Southland (Bruce Seat) and later in Auckland (Auckland City West).
He moved to Auckland after the death of his first wife. Later he married Agnes Sinclair. He had four children to his first wife, two to his second. In 1875 he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court.[1]
Mr Justice Gililes died in 1889 from a fit of apoplexy, after a day in court.[2][3] [4][5][6][7][8]
