Civil War Union Pvt., Co D 38th Iowa Infantry "The Martyr Regiment" The regiment received this nickname since approx. 1/3 of its number died of disease such as typhoid from Jul-Dec 1863 in Louisiana & Mississippi after the Siege of Vicksburg. Others were discharged disabled and died on the trip home or soon after. There were so few able-bodied men left that the 38th Iowa was combined with the 34th Iowa Infantry for the rest of the Civil War. Georgeson, Peter Age 18. Residence Ossian, Iowa; nativity Norway. Enlisted Aug. 22, 1862. ^[1] Died in the Vicksburg Siege Campaign
