Son of Ignatius and Anne (Edelen) Gardiner. Since he was the only THOMAS GARDINER in St. Mary's County at the time, and the right age, he was probably the one who was a sailor on the ship "Defense" from 5/22/1777 - 7/7/1777 during the Revolutionary War ("Archives of Maryland"). THOMAS GARDINER was paid a bounty by the State for making salt on 7/15/1782 ("Archives of Maryland"). Children of Thomas Gardiner, Sr., and Henriette (Goodrum) Gardiner: Sarah, Raphael, Clement, Jane, Nancy Ann, Thomas, Jr., James, and Richard.
