Biography

He was the son of Luke Gardiner and Ann Craycroft. He passed away in 1782. [1]

In 1759, Richard Gardiner purchased The Manor of Truman Place in Gallant Green, Charles County MD from Charles Carroll of Annapolis. He renamed the manor Tudor Place and expanded the manor house to a full two stories. [2]

May 5, 1782. I, Richard Gardiner of CC, am sick in body but of sound and perfect memory. Firstly, I want my just debts and funeral charges paid.

To my son Henry - all that plantation which he now possesses, and after my death, the rest of my land lying on his side of the branch, being part of a tract of land called Trumans place. Also 30 £specie, in order to assist him in the support of his dear children.

To my son William - part of a tract of land called the Inclosure, being part of a tract of land I purchased of William Wilkinson.

To my son William - 100 £specie, in order to assist him in building a dwelling house. Also, he is to have my Negro carpenter, Moses, in the building of his house. I also give William 4 Negroes, namely James, Jacob, Simon, and Peter. Also 5000 lbs of crop tobacco.

To my son John Francis - a tract of land called the denial, and a tract of land which is already laid off to him, being part of a tract of land called Allens Addition, and also part of a tract of land called Trumans place, adjoining to the above tract bequeathed to him, and also a small tract of land called the enclosure, and also 100 £specie, in order to assist him in building necessary houses, and it is my will he should have Negro Moses to assist him in carrying on his buildings.

To my son Joseph Benedict - part of a tract of land called Nuthels branches and part of a tract of land called Trumans place and part of another tract called Allens Grove and Allens Addition, and also another tract of land taken up by a manor warrant, called middle Ground, containing 19 acres, and also 155 £specie, in order to make his lands equal in value to my other sons. Also 100 £specie to carry on his buildings, and it is my will he should have Negro Moses to assist him in building necessary houses.

To my son Charles - all my plantation on which my dwelling house stands, and part of a tract of land called Trumans Place and part of a tract of land called Allans Grove and Allens Addition. I desire that Susanah Philips live with Charles during his single life, and receive from him annually the wages she has been accustomed to receive from me.

To any 3 single sons, John Francis, joseph Benedict, and Charles -- my whole personal estate, to be equally divided between them.

Signed - Richd Gardiner, Wit - Joseph Mudd, Benjamin Wood, Stafford (x his mark) Taylor.

It is my will that Susanah Phillips receive from my estate 5000 lbs crop tobacco next Oct 12 as the remainder of her wages due from me.

Probated on Jul 13, 1782 by the oath of John Francis Gardiner, one of the executors, and by the oaths of witnesses Joseph Mudd and Stafford Taylor.
