Biography

Anna was born about 1842 in New York State, USA. She was the daughter of John Garahan and Marcella Kennedy, the fifth of their nine children. The three eldest, all sons, had been born in Ireland. Censuses from Anna's childhood recorded her name as Ann. The earliest record of the Garahan family in the town of Oswego, N.Y, was an 1852 business directory that listed her father as a laborer and the family address on East Tenth where they remained for decades.

John, Sr., Anna's father died in approximately 1864. Her brother Simon, a ship carpenter, lived next door with his family. In 1865, the final full year of the U.S. Civil War, Anna, her mother, and her sister Mary were the only members of their Oswego household. Three of her brothers and Mary's husband were engaged as soldiers and away at war. None died, but brothers Peter and James were seriously injured in the Battle of Gettysburg, Peter fighting for the Union and James for the Confederacy.

By 1870 Anna was a domestic servant, one of three, living and working in the household of an Oswego businessman. Marrying Spencer Timothy Axtell (1848-1915) in approximately 1872, by 1875 the young couple was living with his mother and sister in Geneva Village near Seneca, N.Y. in Ontario County. Spencer was a boatman, and a son, Freeman George Axtell (1873-abt.1956), had been born. By 1880 the growing family was back in Oswego, where they remained to raise nine children.

It was the U.S. Census of 1900 that recorded Anna's birth month as December 1845, though Anna's earliest civil record, the New York Census of 1855 listed her age as 13, making her birth year 1842. Anna and Spencer had been married for 28 years. Their six daughters and three sons ranged in age from 11 to 26 years and all remained at home, six holding jobs. Spencer worked as a boiler maker.

Anna passed away 11 December 1914 in Oswego. Spencer died just over a year later in January 1916.

The Graham profile cited no sources for a maiden name of Graham, but provided links to an existing profile for Anna's husband and their nine children. The Garahan profile documented Anna's immigrant family in Oswego, Oswego, N.Y. citing sources back to 1852, for Anna's parents and eight siblings. Both profiles agreed upon sources that commenced with Anna's marriage to Spencer Axtell in approximately 1872. The source that proved the name of Anna Garahan Axtell was found in a social security record for daughter Marcella A. Miller. It is cited below.
