Biography

Flag of Cambridgeshire (adopted 2015)
Elias Gambie was born in Cambridgeshire, England.

Elias was born in 1844. He was the son of William Gambie and Rebecca Coleman.

[1]Elias Gambie and his wife Matilda arrived in Australia in 1872 aboard the Ship John Rennie, their third child Alice Rennie Gambie being born somewhere around Indonesia aboard ship on the journey out.

Marine Birth Certificate 533 On board Ship John Rennie sailed from Plymouth 12 Nov 1872, arrived Port Denison 16 Feb 1873 No 676 Nov 25th 1872 23 deg 27" N, 22-23 W 'Alice Rennie Gambia (as written) Elias Gambia Labourer 27 years / Matilda Ann Hayden 25 years b Triple (should be Thriplow) England

Russell Frost /Surgeon Witnesses Russell Frost MRCS Mary Milgate

They settled at Gootchie and were joined in Australia the next year by Matilda’s brother James Hayden and his wife Jane.

James Hayden, aged 21 years, brother of Matilda Ann Gambie, arrived at Maryborough on 26th January 1874, on the ship Tim Whiffler, after departing London on 19/10/1873. He was accompanied by his wife Jane, (nee Andrews) aged 22 and young first born son Arthur James (aged 6 mths) having apparently married the previous year.

James was to be employed by one John Buttler for a period of 3 months and his wife by Joseph Wade of Gootchie for 6 months. The Association with Joseph Wade apparently continued as he was one of the witnesses testifying that James Hayden had lived on the selection No 489 for a period of 2 years when he was applying for the deed to that land (the other witness was William Hamilton).

The Selection No 489 Gympie, Portion 32 County March, Parish Gundiah (sometimes given as Gootchie), was of 82 Acres and was originally surveyed on 3/9/1874 by A A Hall as being 80 Acres. This was no doubt the reason for the deed not being issued until 1883, after it was originally applied for in 1876.

The Description given in 1876 was as follows

House ..............£20
Barn..................£20
Cottage..............£10
15 Acres Cultivated...£6 per acre............£90
33 Chains Fence 4/- per Rod.............£26-8-0
60 Rods Paling fence........................£18
Total...........£184/8/0

The Reason for the two dwellings was obviously to house the two families living there at the time; ie

James Hayden, his wife & 3 Children &
Elias Gambie, his wife & 3 Children

as the 1879 Electoral Roll shows

Elias Gambie.......Olive Green Farm, Leasehold, Gootchie
James Haydon.....Olive Green Farm, Leasehold, Gootchie

Since William Gambie was born on 10-1-1877, at 'Gootchie [2]this is very likely the place where he was born. Elias and Matilda & Children probably remained there until at least 1881 when a new description and application were sent in, since two houses were also on this new description.

The Gambie Family moved to the Howard district probably about 1882. The family lived in a house in Hurley Street, probably for about 5 years. School records show on September 1, 1882:

Parent/ Guardian: Elias Gambie
Child & age: Amos 13, Flora 11, Alice 9 & William 5.
Residence: Hurley St Howard.

In early 1886, Elias bought a block of land in Thomas St Howard [3]and built a house on it.

He and his wife remained there for the rest of their lives.

They are both buried in the Howard Cemetery,
