Ezra worked as a railroad sectionhand, however he became well known as a local organizer for the United Mine Workers of America in Mingo County, West Virginia. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Lick Creek Tent Camp used to house miners and their families after the Baldwin-Felts agents evicted them from the Stone Mountain Coal Camp, both by leasing land and ordering the first 300 tents. He was one of the 23 men tried and acquitted of murder during the Battle of Matewan.
