He married Hannah Jeffries in 1896.[1][2] At the time of the 1901 census, he was living (or staying) with his mother and stepfather in Byker.[3][4]

By 1911, James was recorded as "single" and living as a board with Mary Robson, married, and her three children. [5] James married Mary in 1918.[6]
