Biography

Sir Michael Foster, MD, was a member of the British Parliament, but first and foremost, he was a renowned psychologist. [1]. He was born On March 8, 1836 in St. Johns, Huntingdon, England to parents Michael Foster and Mercy Cooper.[2]

In 1863 he married Georgianna Gregory Edmunds in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England. She was the daughter of Cyrus R Edmunds. [3]

In 1871, Michael was living in his parents' household, with his own two children Michael 6 and Mercy 3, as well as two sisters, a visitor and 3 servants: a housemaid, a nursemaid and an undergroom. Sadly, his young wife Georgianna had died two years prior. [4]

By 1881, he had remarried, a Margaret Sarah Rust, and was living in Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire with his two children, two visitors and two servants. [5]

He passed away in London on January 29,1907 and is buried in Priory Road Cemetery in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, England.[6]

Obituary

(from FindAGrave) Physiologist and Author. He was joint editor with E. Ray Lankester of The Scientific Memoirs of Thomas Henry Huxley. His chief writings were a Textbook of Physiology (1876), which became a standard work, and Lectures on the History of Physiology during the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries (1901), which consisted of lectures delivered at the Cooper Medical College, San Francisco, in 1900. He was an elected member of Parliament between 1900-1906, representing the University of London. An avid iris gardener, he was the binomial author of the plant species, Iris lineata Foster ex Regel, which was originally described and published in Gartenflora (1887), and later cited in Curtis's Botanical Magazine (1888). In scientific botanical description, the name Foster is used when referencing this person as the author.
