He was first engineer on board the BAVARIAN, a steamer sailing on Lake Ontario to Montreal. When a beam broke and a fire started, he was one of fourteen lost.[1] His body later washed ashore in December at Kendall, Orleans County, in a life preserver marked with the steamer's name.[2]
