From the diary of Sir William McArthur[4] 1855 November 8th, Saw Sam Finlay and his cousin Gault off to Australia on the Catherine Adamson.
1866 November 15th, Montreal, Found Finlay waiting for me [footnote: 'His cousin Mr Samuel Finlay, son of the Rev. William Finlay']. Called on Rev Mr Elliott and Mr John Mathewson, an old friend of my father's. The meeting was a miserable failure. Mr Elliott was opposed to an centennial celebration. The lay friends were not consulted and no publicity given to the meeting; the attendance was small, and all was cold and death-like. The whole amount contributed by the city of Montreal 1,400 dollars, of which Mr Finlay gave 500.[5] Oct 17, Quebec - Arrived this morning with Mr Finlay. Drove to the Falls of Montgomery, a magnificent sight.[6] from 'Sir William McArthur KCMG: A Biography, religious, parliamentary, municipal, commercial'
