Biography

George was born about 1821. He was the son of Benjamin Fergusson and Eleanor Tierney.

He was christened on 7 May 1822 at St. Clement Danes, Westminster, Middlesex, England[1].

His father passed away in 1824.

George graduated from Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).

At the age of 28 George emigrated from England to New Zealand. He travelled on the Ship Lady Nugent, departing from Plymouth on 13th December 1849 - arrived Port Chalmers 26 March, on to Wellington, May and Nelson 10 May 1850.

He made his way north to New Plymouth, then on to Auckland, and then George settled in Whangaroa in the far North in 1855.

He had a daughter; Margaret with Tekari O Takirau, Chieftainess of Rangaunu.

He passed away in 1902 at the age of 82.

TARANAKI HERALD, VOLUME L, ISSUE 12035, 2 AUGUST 1902
Per Press Association. Auckland, August. 3.~ An old Colonist, Mr George Tierney Fergusson, of Toroa, passed away today in his 82nd year. He was the sixth son of Benjamin Fergusson, a Captain in the East India Company's service, and a cousin of Sir Jas Fergusson, formerly Governor of New Zealand. He arrived at Christchurch by the ship Lady Nugent in 1850. Among his fellow passengers were Messrs Godley, Wakefield, O'Locklan, and Spencer. After a time he visited Wellington, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Auckland, and finally arrived in Whangaroa in 1855, where he resided until his death.[2]

Totara North Cemetery, Northland, New Zealand. Division : PUBLIC LAWN, Block : 5, Row : 1, Plot : 2.[3][4]
