Oct 2021 update
The yDNA haplotree continues to evolve, and looks to be going some way to corroborating the y67 STR 67/67 match below.
The latest BigY result from the FTDNA Fairbairn surname DNA project has created a new sub branch, I-FTB47670, for descendants of both James Fairbairn m. Lindsay, and of George Fairbairn m. Paton, which branch is now nearer in time than the previously allocated haplogroup I-BY197862
At this now "Parent SNP level" (I-BY197862) the new BigY results are for the 67/67 match below, who is highly likely to be a descendant of the John and Magdalen (BO) FAIRBAIRN
your challenge is to find where exactly these lines connect!
Dec 2018:
A descendant, Bob (F-34), of James and Agnes (LINDSAY) FAIRBAIRN is an excellent yDNA match (67/67) to believed descendants of John and Magdalen (BO) FAIRBAIRN, but where James "fits" into that tree is completely unknown.
As Alexander is a family name for Bob's line, perhaps there's a link with one of the Alexanders contemporary with the John of Stewart's line, and possibly there is a connection to one of the early Alexanders in Mellerstain, Earlston?
The Alexander married to Betsy NEWTON however is spoken for, as is his son James - who married Agnes BRACK in 1783 at Lauder.
Exploration of a possible AITCHISON link may bear some fruit for a connection between Bob's line and that of another excellent match, F-42.[2]
