Some things and questions I've turned up. Not sure where they might fit. Walter was noted to have born in Scotland (sometime in 1841). Francis/Frank was reportedly born in New York in May 1844. Jarvis was born in 1846, and in some Census they list he was born "at sea", while in others, he was born in New York or even "unknown". Meanwhile, the marriage reportedly happened in 1841 in New York. Jarvis' reported "at sea" birth is the only hint I've seen of when they may have migrated, but it doesn't match timing of other things (births/marriage). Perhaps they had reason to go back to Scotland at one point?

The following things, however, are documented:

On the 4th of January, 1864, John enlisted in the U.S Army during the Civil War. He is noted as joining the “20 V.M. Inf” regiment out of Kingston, New York, and mustered on the 5th of January as a Private. His parents Walter Atkin and Agnes Robinson are noted. By the 29th of April, 1864, John had been discharged from service at Elmira (a key muster and training point for the Union Army) “on account of our age”. <ref> New York State Archives; Albany, New York; Town Clerks´ Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca 1861-1865; Collection Number: (N-Ar)13774; Box Number: 63; Roll Number: 34</ref>

In 1865 (7 Jun), the Fairbairn family was located in a log-built home in Hardenburgh, Ulster, New York. Present were head of house John Fairbairn (51, Farmer, born Scotland), his wife Elizabeth E Fairbairn (45, born Scotland), and their children, "Jarvin" B. (19 born at sea), James E. (16 born Delaware County), with the remaining children born in Ulster County being John F (13), Nelson G (10), George G. (10), and William H (2 ¾).<ref> New York State Archives; Albany, New York, USA; Census of the State of New York, 1865</ref>
