entry headed Fala 8th July 1808 reads: "The which day James Fairbairn and Maitland Bird his spouse had a son born and baptised named Robert"^[1][2]

or about 1811^[3][4] East Lothian, Scotland^[5]

Research notes

Robert's birth

no Roberts of this vintage obvious on the OPR in ELN (nearest would be 1803 to James FB & Margaret WATSON but their Robert is accounted for, dying in 1881 Loanhead, married to Agnes WOOD)

However, in Fala & Soutra, 1808, there's a Robert to a James and Maitland (BIRD), which is surely way to much of a coincidence given the 1851 census "son" Maitland and 1860 dtr Matilda of the same age? (Maitland was female in 1841)

And then throw in the 1837 witness to Robert and Jane's Kelso marriage being a Charles FAIRBAIRN. This latter makes it likely that this father James is the son of James and Christian (JERDAN), making Robert and Charles' 2nd cousins Henderson-2297

no children obvious on igi or OPR - inital thought that they were the Robert and Jane (GRAY) in Kelso 1837 on IGI, but Myotischacha, a descendant of William, advises that William's dth cert says Jane's surname was BAIRD. However the OPR entry for the 1837 Robert does rather look like this couple:
