Soley by timing, it seemed likely that the James married to Margaret GIBSON in 1737 would be the 1715 James son of James and Marion (CRAIG) FAIRBAIRN.
At the time I ( Lorna) was lacking dates for the schoolmaster beyond "1740s" and had two confusing extracts from apprenticeship records to unravel.
I was pointed to the birth of Adam, which highlighted that James, a mason, was sponsor for the father-less Adam, son of the late James, schoolmaster, and my correspondent added that this James was Adam's step brother.
It is noted that this id makes two William's in the family, with no immediately obvious death of the elder William in the very patchy OPR deaths.
Certainly the baptism of the mason James' eldest son John was witnessed by a CRAIG (and a MARSHALL)
The will of John Fairbairn (1738 - 1810) bookseller in Edinburgh, provides many bequests of interest. Henderson-2297
