He married Kate Lamb (the second daughter of Reverend Robert Gumbleton Lamb and Sarah Helena Welsh) on 25 March 1862 at Trinity Church in Cape Town, after Banns[2].
The witnesses were his sister-in-law Charlotte Lamb and James Templar Horne. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 3 of the Cork Constitution dated 4 June 1862:

On the 25th March last, at Trinity Church, Cape Town, by the father of the bride, James Alexander Fairbairn, Esq., Clerk of the Legislative Council, to Kate, second daughter the Rev. Robert G. Lamb, Colonial Chaplain, Cape Town, Gape of Good Hope.[3]

James Alexander Fairbairn died on 4 May 1898, aged 62 due to Cardiac disease and Syncope, and was buriedon 5 May 1898 at St. Saviour's Anglican Church Cemetery, Claremont, City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality, Western Cape, South Africa[9][10][11].
