Biography

John Fairbairn was born 1832[1] to James Fairbairn and Joan Forsyth.

Family information (from "Grandma Viele", Helen Joan (Fairchild) Viele) is that John joined the 92nd Gordon Highlanders but deserted from Ireland, heading for America, where he became known as John Fairchild.

He died in Iowa in 1894[2]

John's birth

family sources have an exact date of 17 May 1832, but a place of Jedburgh.
There is a baptism in Hobkirk on that exact date, to a James, no mother named, with the place of Gatehousecote, and no baptism obvious in the Jedburgh OPR.
