George Denison Faber was MP for York 1900 - 1910 and then MP for Clapham 1910 - 1918. He was Registrar of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council 1887 - 1896. He owned the ground lease of Covent Garden which he sold in 1898 for £110,000. On his death in 1931 his estate was valued at £870,830. He was a CB.
He inherited a huge sum of money following the death of Andrew Montagu of Ingmanthorpe Hall, Wetherby, Yorks who died in 8th Oct 1895. Probate of his estate was granted on 6th December to George Denison Faber, Registrar of the Privy Council. Mr Montagu's estate was valued at £1,997,099, 8s 4d. Montagu (1815 - 1895) assumed the surname of Montagu in 1826, replacing the surname of Fountayne Wilson under the terms a bequest. The will of Mr Montagu has not been seen but other references suggest that his estate benefitted both George Faber and his brother Edmund Beckett Faber. This may help to explain why George and Edmund both left enormous estates (Edmund left some £600,000 in 1920), while their other brothers did not. Mr Montagu's money seems to have come from ownership of vast property and from mining. In 1883 Andrew Montagu was the owner of over 27,000 acres of land in five counties bringing him a gross income of £53,000 a year.
A cartoon by 'Stuff' The cartoon by 'Stuff' published in Vanity Fair, February 8th 1900 and titled 'ex opera' has the following caption:
"Men of the Day No 773 - Mr George Denison Faber. Seven and forty years ago he began life as the second son of Charles Wilson Faber, of Northaw House in Wiltshire; and at Marlborough he once took all the Rugby wickets. That qualified him for Oxford, where he got a degree and went to the Bar. Family influence did not yield briefs, but he got the Office of Registrar of the Privy Council: from which he retired four years ago on suceeding to much wealth. Then he tried Italian Opera; but the duties worried him and he parted with the big theatre to a syndicate, gave up hunting and took to Politics. He may, indeed, be Member for York when these lines are read. On his father's side, he comes from an old Huguenot family; and on his mother's, is a nephew of doughty Lord Grimthorpe. Himself has a Duke and several Peers to his brothers-in-law; he is a favourite with ladies, who has been called "Beautiful George"; he stands well over six feet; he is always well groomed, and his wife believes in him. He thinks that he knows a picture when he sees it." [11]
