John Joseph Esmonde was born in Drominagh, Borrisokane, County Tipperary, Ireland on 27 January 1862. He was the son of James Esmonde and Caroline Sugrue. [1]
He married, firstly, Rosina Magennis, daughter of John Magennis, on 7 May 1888. John and Rose had eight children: Rose Mary (or possibly Rosemary) (1889), Caroline (1890), Isabel (b 1891, d 1892), John Lymbrick (born 1893), Frances (1896), Geoffrey (1897), Anthony Charles (1899), and Josephine Margaret (1900). Rosina died on 6 August 1901. [2]
John then married Eily O'Sullivan, daughter of Dr. D. A. O'Sullivan, on 24 July 1904. They then had six children: Owen James (born 1905), Donal (1906), John Witham (1907), twins Eugene and James Bartholomew (1909), Mary Carmel (1912) and Patrick (1914). [1] [3] From December 1910 until his death he was the Member of Parliament for North Tipperary representing the Irish Parliamentary Party. [4] In 1915, during World War 1, he was given the rank of temporary Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. [1]
John Esmonde died on 17 April 1915, from pneumonia and heart failure, as a result of the strain of overwork. He was buried in the family vault in Terryglass, County Tipperary. [5] Probate was granted on 10 July 1915, leaving £857 16s 1d to his widow, Eily. [6]
As one of the 22 members of Parliament who died during World War One his name is recorded on the Parliamentary War Memorial in Westminster Hall, London.
