Thomas was born in 1851 in the County of Donegal, Ireland, the son of George Elliott and Mary Cassidy. Thomas was baptised on March 23 1851 at Ardara.
His mother is recorded as Catherine on the Baptism record but as Mary Cassidy on his death record.
Thomas spent time in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire with his brothers John and William. He was a witness to John's marriage in 1874 to Christina Kerr in Kilmarnock.
Thomas left Scotland from Glasgow on the ship Oamaru leaving Glasgow 30 November 1874. They arrived at the Port of Otago on 15 February 1875. Also on board was Christina's sister Jane and her husband James Boyd. John's son George wasn't listed perhaps due to his age, about 2 weeks old. His age given as 23 but was a few years older. Thomas settled in Taieri, Otago.
He joined in Community events and participated in the North Taieri Ploughing Match held 22 June 1875 receiving 3rd prize for his effort.
At age 26, Thomas married Scottish born, Marion Mitchell and they set up home at Willowbank raising a family of 10 children.
He firstly worked as a Labourer and was later employed with the Railways as a Surfaceman.
Thomas Elliott died age 66 and is buried at Middlemarch Cemetery. BLK 10 PLOT 1.[1]
