Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

John Edgecombe, son of John Edgecombe and Sarah Stallyon, was born in New London, Connecticut on November 14, 1675.[1][2][3] He was baptized in New London on January 30, 1675/6.[4]

Marriage and Children

John Edgecombe married Hannah Hempstead in New London on February 28, 1699/1700.[1][2][3]

John and Hannah had the following children:

  1. John, b. January 29, 1700/1 (11th month on 1700),[1][3] living in 1727 (based on being mentioned in father's will),[3] may be the John Edgecomb who died in New Hartford in 1772 or may have died by 1736[3]
  2. Nicholas, b. August 10, 1702,[1][3] living in 1727 (based on being mentioned in father's will),[3] d. probably by 1736[3]
  3. Hannah, b. September 9, 1704,[5][3] m. April 28, 1726 John Chappell, Jr. in New London[5][6][3]
  4. Sarah Elizabeth/Elizabeth, b. September 25, 1708,[1][3] m. April 3, 1733 David Richards in New London[5][3]
  5. Sarah, b. March 20, 1710/11,[1][3] m. August 5, 1731 Robert Douglass in New London[1][3]

Will; Death; Estate

John made his will on December 18, 1727. In his will, he described himself as "of New London." He made bequests to his wife Hannah, sons John, Nicholas and Jesse, daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Hannah and Grace, and nephew John Edgecomb (son of brother Thomas). He named his "loving brother" Joshua Hempstead sole executor.[7][3]

John died in New London, Connecticut on the night of March 18/19, 1731/2, as established by an entry in Joshua Hempstead's diary on March 19 that states "Brother John Edgcumb Died last night of a Lingering Illness. he hath been drooping about 20 years aged 56."[8][3]

The division of John's estate is recorded in the diary of Joshua Hempstead Jr. starting on 21 January 1733/34: "Mond 21 fair. I was most of the day about a Division for John Edgcumbs Children of the Movables &c. Tuesd 22 Rain in the aftern & at night. I was al day up to John Edgcumbs House helping about the Division. Wednsd 23d Rainy & warm. I was at Jno Edgcumbs helping Divide &c."[9]

I added some entries from the Joshua Hempstead diary about the "Division" of the estate in early 1734. Will try to add some more diary entries when I have time.

According to my notes, an entry in the diary of Joshua Hempstead Jr. dated 19 March 1731/32 says that John Edgecomb died "last night". So it is not entirely clear if John died late 18 March or early 19 March.
