Will; Death; Estate
John made his will on December 18, 1727. In his will, he described himself as "of New London." He made bequests to his wife Hannah, sons John, Nicholas and Jesse, daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Hannah and Grace, and nephew John Edgecomb (son of brother Thomas). He named his "loving brother" Joshua Hempstead sole executor.[7][3]
John died in New London, Connecticut on the night of March 18/19, 1731/2, as established by an entry in Joshua Hempstead's diary on March 19 that states "Brother John Edgcumb Died last night of a Lingering Illness. he hath been drooping about 20 years aged 56."[8][3]
The division of John's estate is recorded in the diary of Joshua Hempstead Jr. starting on 21 January 1733/34: "Mond 21 fair. I was most of the day about a Division for John Edgcumbs Children of the Movables &c. Tuesd 22 Rain in the aftern & at night. I was al day up to John Edgcumbs House helping about the Division. Wednsd 23d Rainy & warm. I was at Jno Edgcumbs helping Divide &c."[9]

I added some entries from the Joshua Hempstead diary about the "Division" of the estate in early 1734. Will try to add some more diary entries when I have time.
According to my notes, an entry in the diary of Joshua Hempstead Jr. dated 19 March 1731/32 says that John Edgecomb died "last night". So it is not entirely clear if John died late 18 March or early 19 March.
