Biography

James came to Western Australia on the James Pattison, arriving at Albany on 19 June 1834.[1]

He married Elizabeth Henderson on 12 October 1843 at Albany.[2]

James was a wheelwright, builder, farmer and pastoralist at Albany. He contracted with John McKail to build the jetty at Albany. He lost an arm in an explosion while firing a salute to welcome Patrick Taylor and his bride in 1837. James was appointed jailor and Police Constable from 1841-1849. In 1844 he was engaged in building the Fairy but did not complete the work.[1]

He retired from the Civil Service and developed "'Woodburn" at Porongorup, employing eight Ticket of Leave men on occasions 1866-1873 including a shepherd and a woodcutter. He was a member of the Albany Town Trust in 1860 and of the Plantagenet Road Board in 1871. His sons were pioneer shepherds at Phillips River.[1]

James died at Porongorup on 2 June 1875.[1][3]

He is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Albany.
