Benefit Performance Next Friday for Family of Mrs. Nellie D. Breyer[2]
With the death of Mrs. Nellie Drury Breyer, Salt Lake loses a conscientious and hard-working actress, and the dramatic profession a faithful exponent. While Mrs. Breyer possessed much natural dramatic instinct, yet it was under the tutelage of her husband that she formed such a great liking for her professional Mr. Breyer comes from a family of actors who have been before the footlights for the past 200 years. His first appearance in this country was in the company of William J. Florence, who made such a brilliant success in "The Almighty Dollar."
Mrs. Breyer first appeared in Salt Lake in the old Lyceum theatre, where she interpreted the character of Mercedes in "Monte Cristo." She afterward was identified with the Home Dramatic company, after which she removed to North Platte, Neb.
On New Year's day of the present year Mrs. Breyer again made her bow before a Salt Lake audience in the character of Madame Forshay in the "Two Orphans," and has appeared with the Utahna company ever since. Her last public appearance was in the character of Mrs. Van Buren in "Frenzied Finance," the first half of last week. As she appeared at that time the audience was unaware of the fatal illness that was even then attacking her, and it was only on the insistence of her physician that she consented to lay down her work which she believed would be only for a short time. Her death is a loss to the Utahna company and many were the expressions of love and tenderness bestowed on "Mother," as she was called by each individual member.
Arrangements have been perfected for a benefit entertainment for the relief of the family of the late Helen Drury Breyer. The performance will be given at the Salt Lake theatre on next Friday afternoon, July 21, on which occasion the Utahna Stock company will present "The New Dominion." Members of the Bittner company from the Grand theatre will also lend their aid, while Manager Gourley has proffered his entire vaudeville aggregation, who will appear between the acts of the play. The prices have been placed within the reach of all 50 cents and 25 cents, and it is believed that the Salt Lake people will respond in a handsome manner and aid a worthy object.
