OBITUARY.
"MRS. HARRIETT LEE. It is with regret that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Harriett Lee, an old and highly, esteemed resident of the Lower Manning district. The late Mrs. Lee only became seriously ill at the beginning of last week, and was moved to the residence of her daughter (Mrs. M. C . Ruprecht, of Taree), where she was tenderly nursed by Mrs. Ruprecht, and Mr. and Mrs. W. Lee. However, it was apparent that the end was near, and despite the best of attention she gradually became weaker until the end came at 11.30 p.m. on Thursday.
The late Mrs. Lee was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Drury, and was born at Glennie's Creek, near Maitland, 86 years ago. When she was a baby her parents moved to Sydney for a few years and then, when deceased was 8 years of age, they came to the Manning and settled at Jones Island, and later at Cundle Plains. Upon reaching womanhood the subject of this notice was married to Mr. Samuel Lee, who, it is interesting to note, was the first white child born on the Richmond River. Following their marriage they went to Port Macquarie to carry on a farm, and subsequently moved back to the Manning. After a few years they again went to Port Macquarie where they resided until Mr. Lee's death about 23 years ago. These journeys between the Manning and Port Macquarie were made on horseback over mere tracks which led round the head of the Camden Haven river. There were no properly formed roads, and the household goods had to be carried by bullock or horse teams. For the last 20 years with the exception of holidays spent with other members of the family, the late Mrs. Lee lived with her son, Mr. W. E. Lee, first at Port Macquarie, and for the last 10 years at Hannam Vale.
The late Mrs. Lee was a very staunch adherent of the Methodist Church, and until about 12 months ago she regularly attended the services. Throughout her long life, she was imbued with the highest ideals and her life was a shining example to all who came under her influence. Kind-hearted, ever ready to assist those in trouble, and with a desire to make the world a better and brighter place, she passes on leaving the most fragrant memory with those who knew her best. The children are: Mesdames Martin and George Ruprecht (Taree), Percy Spindler (Central Tilba, South Coast), Maurie Littleton (Melbourne), T. Wesley (Port Macquarie), Messrs. Geo. Lee (Wauchope), Samuel and Wm. Edward Lee (Hannam Vale), Charles Leslie Lee (Kendall), and Bertie James Lee (Rawdon Island). There is also an adopted daughter (Mrs. Jack Garrett, of Pembroke). One daughter, Alice, died at the age of 14 years. There are 32 grandchildren, and 23 great-grand-children.
Deceased was the last member of her own family. The late Edward Drury, who died at Lansdowne, was a brother and the late Mrs. James Evenden, of Coopernook, was a sister.
At 9 a.m. today (Saturday) the Rev. C. L. Connor will conduct a short service at the Taree Methodist Church, after which the body will be taken by road to Port Macquarie for interment beside the remains of her late husband. Mr. W. T. Howard has the funeral arrangements in hand."[5]
