He was the son of William Doxford, a shipwright, and Hannah Pile and was he baptised on 14 March 1841 at St Michael’s Church.[2][3] Theodore was the fourth child and first son in a family of ten children:[4]

The 1841 census recorded the family living in Bridge Street, Bishop Wearmmouth.[5]

By 1851 the family had moved to 14 Bewick Street, Bishopwearmouth and ten-year-old Theodore was recorded as attending school.[6][7]

Theodore attended Bramham College, a public school in Yorkshire. Following his education, he started working at his father's company, William Doxford & Sons in the Pallion area of Sunderland.[4]

In 1861 the family lived in New Pallion, Bishop Wearmouth. Theodore was now a clerk in his father's company.[8][9]

Following the issue of a marriage licence[10] Theodore married Margaret Wilkinson at St Andrew’s Church, Deptford Sunderland on 9 April 1863.[11][12][13] The couple had nine children:

He was buried in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery[21] on 4 October, following a service in Hylton Parish Church.[22]

Obituaries were published in many newspapers.[23]

Probate for his estate was granted on 27 December 1916[24][25] with his son Albert Ernest Doxford and his son-in-law engineer and Alfred Octavius Hedley (Mary Hannah's husband) as executors
