William was born in 1805 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire, Scotland.
He married Jane Turnbull of Oxnam. They had nine children in various parts of Roxburgh, Cumberland and Caithness, up to 1854.
He emigrated with his eldest son, William, on the ship Maori, leaving Gravesend London about the 7th July, 1855. The journey of 107 days finished at Nelson on 23rd October 1855, where the majority of the passengers left the ship. There is no news article about its arrival in Wellington, but we can assume passengers for that port were disembarked a few days later. The Maori made regular voyages to NZ in the 1850’s, and commonly delivered passengers to multiple ports on arrival in our waters.
At some point, William moved to Hawera, leaving the running of Te Mahanga Station to his son William.
He passed away at Hawera in 1901, having seen Te Mahanga pass into the hands of his grandsons W J & AF Douglas.
