Biography

Henry Doude Jr. was baptized on 27 October 1611, Woodchurch, Kent, England.[1]

According to Rev W W Doud, Henry Doude came to Guiliford, Connecticut with the colony of Reverend Henry Whitfield on the St. John, originating either in Surrey or Kent, England with a disclaimer that Henry Doud was probably from Guildford of Surrey, which was then 17 miles southwest of London.

The St John sailed from England on 20 May 1639 under the command of a Captain Richard Russell, and arrived at New Haven (then Quinnipac), Connecticut, between the 10th and 15th of July 1639. While at sea, the members of the colony devised an agreement, similar to a "commune" as it would be known today, where everyone worked together as they were able for the betterment of the community, and the care of all. This agreement came to be known as the Plantation Covenant. Twenty five men signed this document on June 1 1639, one of which was Henry Doude.

Henry Doude was settled on land about 1/4 of mile north east of the "Green" on the road extended which at that time traveled up the east side of the "Green"

Rev. Doud also states that he was unable to find a record for Elizabeth's maiden name, and supposes that perhaps Henry and Elizabeth were married in England.

Henry died in 1668, and was bur. 31 Aug 1668, in Guilford.[2] Elizabeth lived on to 1713 according to Rev. W W Doud, others state that Elizabeth also died in 1668, but I have not been able to find any clear documentation for either. Rev Doud stated that he had access to definitive documents of the first three generations of Henry Doud's family at the time of his research.

It is unknown whether Henry lived there at the time of his death, and it is unknown where he is buried.

Henry is the direct ancestor of Mamie Doud Eisenhower, wife of President Dwight Eisenhower.

The daughter Elizabeth attached born Loose in Kent is completely unsourced. I can find no record of this baptism.

Henry was actually baptised at Womenswold, not Woodchurch which is about 30 miles away.

This was discussed on G2G five years ago, and it seems to have been concluded that he was baptized at All Saints, Woodchurch: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/657021/immigrant-henry-doude-1611-christened-woodchurch-womenswold

Ah thanks for that. I hadn’t managed to scrabble around and find the images of the registers.

I always check images if they are available as often you find errors or extra info not transcribed. Regards, Ann

I have added sources and modified the list of Henry's children to conform to Rev. Doud's 1885 family history by adding names of children who are attached and removing the names of two grandchildren. The page numbers already showing above are probably those in the Barbour Collection Volume for Guilford but aren't identified. That volume evidently isn't available online but excerpts of its contents were published in TAG Vols. 13 and 15-19, starting with 13:88. I didn't notice or suspect the profile was project-protected, mea culpa.

Henry's widow's profile cites an inventory of her estate taken in 1683, so this profile's narrative re her date of death should be revised.

I would like to see some better sourcing and footnoting on this profile. Find a grave etc. don't count. Some of the footnoted sources S0200 and S185 have disappeared from the list. What is the source that confirms Henry the immigrant as the Henry bpt 1611 son of these parents?

Although the marriage license information isn't absolute proof, it is a very good match. It says Henry was of Tenterden which only 3 or 4 miles from Woodchurch. And the age of 22 or thereabouts is a pretty good match for Henry of Woodchurch who would have been about 23 1/2 years old.

I found the marriage license information online. It is in Volume 2 (page 294) showing the information for Henry Doud and Elizabeth Dadson. Page 294 appears on sheet 161 (of 660). Here's weblink: https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/129099-canterbury-marriage-licences-vol-2?viewer=1&offset=0#page=161&viewer=picture&o=info&n=0&q= I have now added this to the list of sources.

The preponderance of evidence indicates that Henry the immigrant is the same person as the one baptized in 1611, identical to the one married in 1635. In fact, I don't believe there was any other Henry Dowde/Doude living in Southeast England, perhaps in all of England, in the 17th century other than the immigrant and his father. The marriage indicates that he had his father's consent, and his father, Henry, was still living at the time of his marriage (but he left no will). Immigrant Henry's daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, are known in New England and were named in the will of Henry's father-in-law, and their baptisms have also been located.

I have begun a discussion at G2G about whether Henry was christened at Woodchurch, Kent, or Womenswold, Kent:

Please add Unknown-310411 (Mrs. Christian Cruttenden) as mother of Henry Doude Jr.

Henry Doude Jr. was son of the following parents (so it was actually Henry Doude Sr. whose 2nd wife was a Woollett/Walcott):

Therefore, please add the following as the parents of Henry Doude Jr.: Henry Doude Sr. (profile: Doude-12) was married on 11 October 1609, Woodchurch, Kent, England, to Mrs. Christian Cruttenden (profile: Unknown-310411). She was buried 15 January 1620/21, Woodchurch, Kent, England.

Henry Doud Sr. married (2nd wife) on 18 October 1626 to Elizabeth Woollett, and they had a daughter Mary. Henry Doud Sr. was buried on 26 December 1638, Woodchurch, Kent, England.

posted by Kenneth Kinman
Elizabeth Walcott is actually 2nd wife of Henry Doud Sr.

Elizabeth Unk should be deleted or merged into Elizabeth Dadson.

posted by Kenneth Kinman
The marriage information with Elizabeth Walcott/Woolett does not match with the birth date of this person. They would have been 14 when they married, and Elizabeth would have been 10. I believe this was an error while trying to justify a maiden name for Elizabeth.

Hi, Nancy

I am descended from your Mary's brother John. I will be uploading a gedcom for these Doud/Dowds in the next week or so.

Well, my hopes are for 'tomorrow' but I have work to do on some lines that have closer connections. It may be a week.

This line seems to be a bit of a 'stub' for you. I doubt we need to do the whole 'trusted list' thing.

But I did want to let you know that more information will be coming, if you are interested.
