Birth

John Poynder Dickson-Poynder, 1st and last Baron Islington was born on 31 October 1866 on the Isle of Wight. He was the son of Rear-Admiral John Bourmaster Dickson and Sarah Matilda Poynder. He was given the name of John Poynder Dickson at birth.

Education

He was educated at Twyford School, Harrow School, Harrow, London, England. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.

Offices

He held the office of High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1890.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wiltshire, Chippenham Division between 1892 and 1910.
He held the office of Member of the London County Council between 1898 and 1904.
He held the office of Governor-General of New Zealand between 1910 and 1912.
He held the office of Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies between 1914 and 1915.
He held the office of Under-Secretary of State for India between 1915 and 1918.

Marriage

He married Anne Beauclerk Dundas, daughter of Henry Robert Duncan Dundas and Hon. Catherine Anne Carrington Napier, on 30 September 1896.

Military Service

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1900. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Scots. He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1901. He gained the rank of Major in the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry.He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry.

Appointments

He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Dickson [U.K., 1802] on 22 June 1884.
He was created 1st Baron Islington, of Islington, co. London [U.K.] on 27 April 1910. :He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG.) in 1911.
He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 5 July 1911.
He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG) in 1913.
He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (GBE.) in 1926.
He was appointed Knight of Justice, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.J.St.J.)

Death

Lord Islington died on 6 December 1936 aged 70 at Hyde Park Gardens, London, On his death, his barony became extinct.

Burial

He was buried at Hilmarton, Wiltshire
