Note: The importance of checking witnesses!
Emma's family has been a bit elusive.
After finding them, some years ago, in the 1881 census of Montreal, they'd disappeared, apart from a 1901 census that might be her parents, if they'd significantly lied about their ages.
This time round, looking for Emma, the marriage of an Emma Elizabeth DAWE in Montreal was found, but with no parents noted. Witnesses J A & Katie SMART.
That surname sounded a bit familiar. Back in 1881 the family had a Julius SMART lodging with them. Given Emma's sister was Catherine, perhaps she had married Julius? And so it turned out, with her marriage to Julius helpfully naming her parents to definitively tie the family together.
All of this find just shifts the mystery as Alex and Emma weren't yet visible beyond this marriage.
Nathaniel's burial in Mt Royal provided the next lead with FindAGrave identifying several other burials that might account for most of the family, including an Oct 1890 death or burial of an Emma Bessie COWAN.
Alexander may, or may not, be the widower remarrying in 1898.
Would like to confirm the above if anyone has defnitive information to compare.[7]
