  • Obituary

LATE OBITUARY. (1928, May 5). [3] Mr. Henry Daw, who died at Port Augusta West last Sunday, at the age of 87 years, was probably one of the last of the pioneer shepherds of this State. Arriving in South Australia 1862, he found employment as a shepherd on the late Mr. P. Butler's Warcowie Station. In 1864 he removed to Stirling North, and was employed assisting to lay the pipes for the first mated main from Woolundunga to Port Augusta. From 1865 to 1876 he was engaged in shepherding for the late Mr. James Waller at Pandurra Station, and for the late H. J. Richman at Carriewillia Station. In 1876 he purchased his first team of bullocks and started as a teamster on the nor' west track, and followed that occupation and also that of dam sinking and fencing for many years. Eventually , he retired in 1848. Early in 1914 the late Mr. Daw took a trip to England, and met his first warship in the Bay of Biscay. In the following year he returned, and since then has resided with one of his sons at Port Augusta West. His name will long be remembered in that district, as he has left 145 descendants in it—four sons, six daughters, 58 grand children, and 77 great-grandchildren. His wife and a daughter predeceased him. Members of his family who survive are Messrs. W. (Beda, Port Augusta West), G. H. (Whittata Station), and J. Daw, and Mesdames J. Tansell, Charles Milford, John Tansell (Hesso), Charles Madland, E. Haurahan, and E. Ellis. The late Mr. Daw never had a day's sickness in his life until a fatal stroke overtook him.
