Biography

Charles Davies MLC has Jewish Roots.

Charles was born in 1847. He was the son of John Davies and Elizabeth Ellis. He passed away in 1921.

Charles Ellis Davies, newspaper proprietor and politician, was born on 13 May 1847 at Wellington, New South Wales. He was employed by the Victorian Railways as an engineer in 1866-69 before joining his father's newspaper, the Mercury to be trained for management.

Charles and his brother George took over the Mercury in 1871, eight months before their father died. The weekly Tasmanian Mail was begun during their term of management in 1877.

Charles, as managing director, was effectively in charge of Davies Bros Ltd. He was co-owner of Hobart's Theatre Royal in the 1890s. He helped form the Southern Tasmanian Agricultural and Pastoral Society in 1874 and was its secretary for twenty years.

In 1897 he was elected to the Legislative Council seat of Cambridge.

Charles and his brother George were Freemasons, and they were both elected members of the Royal Society of Tasmania in 1884.

Charles married Sophia Margaretta Wilson on 16 March 1870, at the Brunswick Street Wesleyan Church, Fitzroy, Melbourne

His second marriage was to Nellie Grace Collins on 24 March 1909, with Anglo-Catholic rites, at Evandale. They had a son and daughter.

Charles Ellis Davies died on 1 February 1921 at Pontville. He was buried in Cornelian Bay cemetery.

His funeral was described in The Mercury.[1]
