Biography

Matilda Jane was born in Virginia in October of 1833 to James Cartmill and Julia H. Brown Davidson. She is listed with her parents and three siblings on the 1850 Census[1] in Jeffersonville, Tazewell, Virginia. In March of 1853 she married James Witten (marriage record below). The couple are listed together on both: the 1860 Census[2] and the 1870 Census[3] in Tazewell, Virginia. The census records indicate that the couple had at least eighteen children (with at least four sets of twins). Matilda passed away in April of 1876 at the age of 42.[4]

Research Notes

Matilda is listed with James and Julia Davidson on the 1850 Census indicating that they are here parents; however it should be noted that three different records pertaining to her death list her father as "R. Davidson"
