Mary (aka Liddy) was born in 1893. She was the daughter of Uriah Curry and Matilda Carey. In 1900, the family was living in Matacumbe, Monroe County, Florida, where her father was farming fruits and vegetables.[1] They were still there in 1910.[2]
Mary Elizabeth was actually known as Liddy most of her life.[3]
Liddy married Jimmy Herring in 1928 in Key West, Florida. Her cousin, Miriam Carey Stewart, was a witness.[4] In 1930, the couple was living with Liddy's parents in Key West, Monroe County, Florida, at 1410 Olivia Street.[5] Her mother, Matilda, passed away later that year.
By 1935, the couple was still living at 1410 Olivia Street. James was listed as an agent in the census, and Liddy as a housewife. Liddy's father, Uriah, was living with them, as well as their son, James (aka Curry).
Liddy passed away in 1984.[6][7] Burial was in the Bethel/Curry family plot in the Key West Cemetery in Key West, Florida, lot number 53.[8][9]

Liddy was my grandmother Miriam Carey Stewart's cousin. I remember visiting Liddy and James Herring many times when I was a child at their beautiful two story old Conch house on Olivia Street. They kept a huge glass bowl full of cat eye marbles sitting in their living room, and allowed me to play with them when my mother and grandmother took me there for a visit. When I was about 12 or 14, Liddy gave me a southwestern style sterling silver cuff bracelet with real turquoise stones. I still have that bracelet today (about 58 years later). It has always been one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. I also enjoyed their gardens and yard. I remember trying a cherry off of their cherry tree but was not impressed because it did not taste sweet as I was expecting it to. I also remember Mr Jim showing me a big galvanized tub he had sitting in the garden full of water and some rusty nails. He explained to me how the nails rusted and left iron in the water to nourish his plants. I always loved going to visit them. Such a sweet couple!
