11 May 1942, Norman enlisted in the Australian Army for part time service in the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC); Service Number: V363182^[3][4]. He was assigned to the 21st Battalion (VIC) VDC; attained the rank of Private and was discharged on 17 September 1945. He was awarded the Australia Service Medal 1939-1945 for his service.
